Module 4: Self Assessment
An introduction to Module 4 from Farellia
What this module is about
In this Module, we are going to work on the Self Assessment framework. At the heart of the framework is a set of 10 practices that can help us to move towards AIDS Competence. The practices that we will present to you in the framework are the ones that we currently work with, but they do evolve as we learn from our experiences. In the Self Assessment, the community looks at itself in terms of these 10 practices.
In this module, we will discuss how this assessment is done. But what we will emphasise is that one of the most important aspects of the Self Assessment is the discussion that takes place around the practices. The challenge is to get all the different groups in a community to discuss their current situation and to reach a consensus.
To emphasise this from the start of the module here is a video clip in which Alison Rader-Campbell of the Constellation explains that for her Self Assessment is a means for a community to enter into a discussion....
How this module fits into the rest of this programme

In Module 3, the Community described a destination. When it built its dream, it described their community when it was AIDS Competent. It might be a distant reality compared with their current position, but it does provide a target to aim for.
In this fourth module of the programme the community looks at itself and describes where it is today. This description provides the benchmark for action. When we are clear about our where we are today and where we want to be, we will be in a good position to think about to think about what we can start to do to move towards our destination.
The objectives of the module
When you have completed this Module, we hope that :
- You will understand the 10 practices of the Self Assessment framework
- You will understand the 5 levels used to describe the Practices
- You will be able to do a Self Assessment
- You will be able to facilitate a Self Assessment
But the aim of the module goes beyond the mechanics of the Self Assessment. During the module, you will be able to listen to lots of different people who will explain why they have found the Self Assessment framework to be useful. Your challenge will be to understand what it can do in your environment.
Our thanks to the Genoka Settlement in Papua New Guinea
...for allowing us to continue to use their example of Action Planning that comes at the end of this module and of Self Measurement of Change that we will cover in Module 5. Our thanks also to the coaches in Papua New Guinea for their help in developing this content.
