Module 6: Learning and sharing
An introduction to Module 6 from Farellia
How this module fits into the programme

We have called this last module of the course 'Learning and sharing'. When we talk about 'learning and sharing', we are interested in 'Learning from Experience'. We will discuss our approach to Learning and Sharing from the personal to the global level.
In the first part of the module will consider the personal or group level. As you have worked through the modules in this programme, you have had the opportunity to work with communities and to learn from them. But how can we do that more efficiently and effectively?
In the second part of the module, we will look at telling stories as a way of learning from our own experience and as a way of sharing that experience with others.
In the third part of the module we will discuss some of the ways in which we are trying to help communities to organise and to document their experiences so that they can be useful to a much wider audience using Knowledge Assets.
And in the fourth part of the Module will consider Learning and Sharing at a larger level. Communities that use the Self Assessment Framework can use that Framework to learn from other communities and to share with other communities. We will introduce you to the Knowledge Fair that we use to encourage learning and sharing at this larger scale and how we use the Knowledge Asset to capture the learning that comes from the event.
Should this be the final module in the programme?
This is the final module in the Blended Learning programme. In Modules 3, 4 and 5, we have stepped methodically through the AIDS Competence process. So you could be forgiven for thinking that 'Learning and Sharing' is the final step in the AIDS Competence process. Well when we started to work on this programme that was how we thought. But we now realise that this is very wrong.
Whenever we bring people together to learn and to share in the way that we describe in this module, the results are overwhelming. So we would ask you to think of the content of this chapter as the final part of the the thinking about the AIDS Competence process, rather than the final step in the process. We would encourage you to look for ANY opportunity to bring people together to learn and to share with each other in the context of this module. We are very confident that the results will exceed your expectations.
The objectives of this module
At the end of this module, we hope that:
- You understand the ideas behind the After Action Review.
- You can be an effective member of a group as it carries out an AAR.
- You can facilitate a group as it carries out an AAR.
- You can tell a story in a ‘learning friendly’ way and you can work with others to help them to tell their stories.
- You understand the concept of a Knowledge Asset and you are able to play your part in building one.
- You know how to organise a Knowledge Fair. You can build a River Diagram and a Stairs Diagram.
Learning to Fly
In this section of the course we will make reference to the book 'Learning to Fly' by Chris Collison and Geoff Parcell. This book describes the tools and processes that were developed within BP and were subsequently used in the development of the AIDS Competence Process. Geoff Parcell was a Founding Member of the Constellation and continues to work with us.
This module contains content taken from Learning to Fly and we are grateful for Chris and Geoff’s permission to use this material in the Blended Learning programme. If you want to learn more about the tools discussed in this module or if you simply want to find out about a host of other tools to help you in the field of Knowledge Management we recommend this book without reservation.
